HOW DO WE SUPPORT SENSORY EXPLORATION?
Before small children are able to communicate, the only way they can make sense of the world is through exploring their senses. Our play ideas are not only fun and stimulating, they engage the 5 most important senses, touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. Research supports that sensory play is crucial for healthy brain development, enhancing the way children think, react, discover and explore. Sensory play has many benefits from promoting better eating, supporting social and emotional development, building focus and attention and assisting cognitive growth. Our play ideas encourage children to richly engage with taste safe materials, explore different textures and stimulate the sense of smell.
WHAT IS MY CHILD LEARNING AT MABEL'S PLAYROOM?
Our play ideas build on essential skills children need to prepare them for school readiness and as they grow into adulthood. As parents, we play a critical role in our children's development of these skills, it's important to provide opportunities that are fun and interactive from birth. Children are natural explorers, the world is brand new and they are waiting to discover absolutely everything around them. The world around us is changing all of the time and our job as parents is to prepare children and equip them with the skills they will need to cope in everyday situations. Children's brains are busy building lots of new connections every single second to allow them to develop these new skills, our activities assist early brain development and the importance of sensory stimulation which small children need in the early years.
FINE MOTOR SKILLS
Fine motor skills involve the use of the small muscles that control the hand, fingers and thumb. They help children perform important tasks like feeding themselves, buttoning buttons, tying their shoelaces and learning how to hold a pencil correctly and write.
GROSS MOTOR SKILLS
Gross motor skills develop before fine motor, they involve the use of the large muscles in our bodies, the arms, legs and torso. Eventually they assist children's everyday tasks such as walking, running and climbing.
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Social and emotional development is a gradual process throughout childhood which children acquire the capacity to understand, experience, express, manage emotions and to develop meaningful relationships with others. This begins at home with their primary caregivers. Our activities foster connection, bonding and understanding.
LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION
Language and communication plays a vital role throughout our lives. Our learning through play helps children to communicate their basic needs and feelings, hold conversations, the ability to think deeply and learn, solve problems and understand what is going on around them.
Cognitive development is how children perceive the world around them. It's how they think, reason, memorise, communicate, problem solve, explore and figure things out.
INDEPENDENCE AND CONFIDENCE
Toddlers crave independence and they are so much more capable than we think. Our activities encourage toddlers and preschoolers to become independent, curious and confident little people.
EARLY MATHS, LITERACY AND SCIENCE
Measuring, sequencing, comparing, understanding size, shape and patterns are just some of the early maths concepts our play ideas help develop. Our simple science experiments are not only exciting, they help young children understand reasoning, make predictions and record observations.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You don't need dozens of toys, a playroom or a huge house to be apart of Mabel's Playroom. Our activities mostly involve supplies that you have lying in the back of your cupboards or low cost supplies that are easily available in local supermarkets. We encourage the use of everyday materials as well as nature and recycled items.
